Amazing Ways in which a Weighted Blanket can help Children with ASD

There are many therapies, products etc., for parents who have kids with autism and sometimes, as much as you want to help your kids, all this information can become overwhelming. But instead of trying to do everything you can for your kid and thus overworking both yourself and your kid, why not try something different? Why not look for things with high leverage points!

What are high leverage points you may ask? A high leverage point is one thing that can be fixed that will have big results in your child.

For example, a high leverage area concerning autistic children is their sleep. For someone dealing with an autistic child at home, we can understand that lack of sleep does not just affect your child and that it affects your family unit as a whole, and it is always better to have a family with a good sleeping pattern.

Therefore it has been noticed that parents with kids on the spectrum have found it easier to put their kids to sleep or have seen an improvement in their kids sleeping pattern with the use of ‘Weighted Blankets.’

What is a weighted blanket?

A weighted blanket is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a blanket with extra weight in it. But remember, you cannot just buy any weighted blanket! The weight varies based on who you are buying it for. For example, if you were buying it for your three-year-old daughter, who weighs 40lbs, then you’d want to get her a five-pound blanket. Basically, something that is 10% of your child’s body weight plus one to two extra pounds.

Like with other normal blankets, these too come in different materials, and the material used for the blanket along with the blankets weight, you can get to know if this blanket can be washed at home or needs to be given for dry-cleaning.

What is the science behind a weighted blanket?

The fundamental science behind a weighted blanket is its ability to provide to provide something called the Deep Touch Pressure’ (DTP). This process allows for the blanket to gently apply pressure to the body to increase the release of serotonin.

Serotonin is a chemical in the body that allows your body to relax. An interesting fact is that, children diagnosed with autism tend to have low levels of serotonin and this is why the DTP method is supposed to help them a lot.

This weighted blanket by gently applying pressure allows the body to release serotonin thus relaxing them. The weighted blanket is not the only product that uses the DTP technique.  There are also weighted vests that your child can wear around himself when he/she is upset.

The deep touch process is something you come across naturally while raising your kid, especially when your kid always hugs you or wants to be hugged, or when your kid requests that you lay with them while they sleep to help them relax and we understand this isn’t always possible, that’s why the weighted blanket and the vest can be used to your advantage as it lets your kids use the same DTP technique and it allows them to use it in different scenarios to relax.
